Omit/Transmit Orchestra is an eight-piece mixed ensemble for electro-acoustic music. We experiment in wholly improvised music—free improvisation for the sake of exploring sounds, concepts, and how they come together to create art. The weekly studio environment we’ve created together since May of 2023 emphasizes voluntary participation, including our leadership. Any of us can bring an experiment, and we support each other as we explore “composing,” “arranging,” “conducting,” and “performing” within the free-music idiom. This means we play together, then discuss and reflect and establish goals, recording all of it.
In 2024, we performed one-off shows in Chicago, composed and recorded more repeatable improvised works, and began devising new multimedia projects that illuminate the edges of our music and the center of our purpose. Throughout the year, we collaborated with Chicago-based dancer Hannah Marcus to provide a live score for her monthly Contemporary Improvisation & Phrasework workshops.
In 2025, we have been devising new live works, with performances at Burlington Bar in February and Epiphany Center for the Arts in April. We continue to accompany regular dance workshops.
